My father also fought in the battle of the bulge. All he ever said to me was it was very cold and to pray to god I don't see a war like that in my life. Like Mike years after his death I got a dozen letters from a aunt he wrote home during the war. What a eye opener!!!!! Thanks Tim Ferguson. Good job Anna!

Dear Anna,

It gave me great joy (& hope) to read your story of interviewing Mr. Wheeler. It's especially gratifying that someone as young as yourself would have such a deep interest & respect for the sacrifices & hardships that Mr. Wheeler & millions of others endured to preserve our freedom - truly they are the "Greatest Generation".

My 88 year old dad, who just passed away this past January, also fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the 9th Armored Division, and my biggest regret is that, as often as I tried over the years, I could never really get him to open up & talk about his experiences in detail. He would only repeat how disappointed he was that the Germans ruined his birthday (December 16th - the day the battle started) & that he was always cold & dirty. All he would say was that he was just like all the rest of the GIs - you put one foot in front of the other & kept going - you did what you had to do - there was really no other option. I found out most of what I now know about that period of his life by reading old letters my family found after his funeral. Thanks for sharing your story, and please share it with others so that we can keep the memory of their sacrifice alive for future generations.

And to both Richard & Scott Wheeler, your service to your country is so greatly appreciated!

Hello Miss Davis,
My name is Scott Wheeler and this is my grandfather. Grandpa was probably one of the kindest and most honest person I have ever met in my short 37 years.
Those years in the Army were the breaking point for many men and women of WWII but my grandfather never regretted his time spent in the service not the experiences he gained.
In 1996 when i joined the Army, Grandpa said that i had to join the Airborne, but i one uped him and did the Airborne plus joined the ARMY Rangers. He was my inspiration and my counselor during this time. We were able to share many stories of our training and our missions.
It is such a pleasure to read your story and to tell my Grandfathers story.

Sincerely,
Scott A. Wheeler

My father, Jerry Wecker is also a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. He is 85 years old. He was given an honorable discharge because his feet froze. He is living near me in the San Fernando Valley. I would like to join in memory of my father like the daughter in this story. I can be reached via this e-mail address.
